Personnages - (from French - characters, heroes)
is a new album by Roksana Vikaluk, and it can be considered a creative summary of the last 6 years. Each of the songs had been composed in various circumstances and situations, some of them as part of a theatrical performance,or heard and brought from other countries. Anyhow, these are mostly own compositions, inspired mainly by Ukrainian and Jewish folk music, avant-garde poetry, where the richness of electronic sounds intertwines with the minimalism and transparency of the sound of the piano. However, singing prevails, and some of the songs, especially those exclusively sung, sound more like few-minutes multilayered theater performances with closer and more distant sound planes. Each song of the album sounds like a separate actor entering the stage and telling his own story. Next to the old Jewish prayer, the Danish Viking Song appears, and the traditional Lemko song - alongside avant-garde poetry. The material, although preserved in a multi-style and multi-cultural climate, does not lose its climatic and sonic cohesion. "Welcome to my Planet!", an inscription in the middle of the album cover, is the main theme. There is a picture of the room in the house where Roksana grew up and where some of her compositions were made. The paintings of her grandfather, Stepan Danylyshyn, theatrical scenographer and costume designer, decorate the walls – one can see set designs and different characters from various theatrical plays, then a mannequin, piano, Hutsul kyptar and photos of Frank Zappa and Miles Davis ...
That's what surrounded the artist while growing up, and that's what influenced her development as an artist and inspires her until today.

about

A well known Central Ukrainian song. The idea of its arrangement came once and then matured directly on stage, during different concerts, as a total improvisation. Recorded in Berlin, September 2018, live in studio with Looper.

lyrics

The fog’s over the ravine, the valley,
‘hind the mist, nothing can be seen,
One can see only an oak, green,
Under that oak, there was a well,
By which there stood a girl,
Who took water and dropped a gold pail,
A Cossack's heart, she has drowned in sadness.
