Personnages - (from French - characters, heroes)
is a new album by Roksana Vikaluk, and it can be considered a creative summary of the last 6 years. Each of the songs had been composed in various circumstances and situations, some of them as part of a theatrical performance,or heard and brought from other countries. Anyhow, these are mostly own compositions, inspired mainly by Ukrainian and Jewish folk music, avant-garde poetry, where the richness of electronic sounds intertwines with the minimalism and transparency of the sound of the piano. However, singing prevails, and some of the songs, especially those exclusively sung, sound more like few-minutes multilayered theater performances with closer and more distant sound planes. Each song of the album sounds like a separate actor entering the stage and telling his own story. Next to the old Jewish prayer, the Danish Viking Song appears, and the traditional Lemko song - alongside avant-garde poetry. The material, although preserved in a multi-style and multi-cultural climate, does not lose its climatic and sonic cohesion. "Welcome to my Planet!", an inscription in the middle of the album cover, is the main theme. There is a picture of the room in the house where Roksana grew up and where some of her compositions were made. The paintings of her grandfather, Stepan Danylyshyn, theatrical scenographer and costume designer, decorate the walls – one can see set designs and different characters from various theatrical plays, then a mannequin, piano, Hutsul kyptar and photos of Frank Zappa and Miles Davis ...
That's what surrounded the artist while growing up, and that's what influenced her development as an artist and inspires her until today.

about

I fell in love with this beautiful Danish song, created by Finn Molsted, while being in Denmark in August 2018. I heard it sung by a huge choir there and it inspired me to make my own arrangement. After it was recorded, my Danish friends Karina Funch, Leonora Sperling and Erling Haagensen could hardly understand, what was I singing. Then Erling and Leonora decided to come from Denmark to Germany in order to help me with the right pronunciation of this one song. This absolutely amazing story has blessed this composition. Recorded in October, 2018, Berlin. Translation by Erling Haagensen with a special care of Alexandra Danilishen.

lyrics

I have been walking for a long time
Oh my feet are so sore.
The darkness is thick, and the wind is tough.
Shine, lantern man, shine. Show me the way.
I will find the treasure.
Oh my feet are so sore.

I trot through forests and stroll through towns.
I think I had a vision.

One night I reached the bank of the lake.
The meadow was lovely, and all was peaceful.

Then in the dusk I saw a blue-purple man.
He danced between tubers and water.

Then he jumped up and then he jumped down.
Soon I forgot my very own name.

Suddenly there were three of the tiny shining ones.
I was running here and running there

He ensnared me, he glowed like coal.
I ran, and I fell into a hole in the marsh.

Instead of the fortune I thought I would find
I sat in the mud, being covered by duckweed.
Shine, lantern man, shine. Show me the way.
I will find the treasure.
Oh my feet are so sore.
