The fog’s over the ravine, the valley,
‘hind the mist, nothing can be seen,
One can see only an oak, green,
Under that oak, there was a well,
By which there stood a girl,
Who took water and dropped a gold pail,
A Cossack's heart, she has drowned in sadness.

When i was a young girl, cows taught me to sing songs.
The cow, which is like a cherry, with dew on the tip of its horn
Was singing a sad song.
The cow, which is green, with a small leaf on the tip of its horn
Was singing with a dance.
The cow, which is blue, with the thin tip of its horn
Was singing of the sun…
But where are the cows, Grandma?
They have passed away, my son.... Long time ago....
The cow, which is green
The cow, which is blue
The cow, which is like a cherry

The Eagles came to my forehead,
and with them - a Village full of small Eagles.
For me your apple like a golden shade,
has dropped into the heart and looks out there.
And for a long time, like white swarms,
nightingales are flying under your eyes.
It's so easy to be sad,
that even the children amuse themselves quietly behind the horizon.

Water dies in a boat,
And the boat dies in the grass,
And grass… Where is the grass?
It slowly rises
And holds its own water by the bottom of the boat.
The horse has resurrected,
It has come alone,
It said: "I will drink,
I will drink this water,
I will drink it with my saddle".
Then the water woke up,
So young, young ....
And then I forgot about that boat ...
With the oar

Cossack Rode Through Town,
A stone has cracked under the hoof.
A stone has cracked under the hoof,
Nightingale has whistled on the grove.
Nightingale, dear brother,
Call me the girl from the house.

Oh forest, my mountain forest
My green forest
For me it shall not be so
For me it shall not be such as before
Before for me
It was very good for me
I shouldn't from my mother
Walk away
Not to walk
by the mountains, the forests
Not to love the one,
With the black eyes
Because the black eyes,
They are shining in the midnight...
And mine
Would follow them

Ruzha / Rose

Oh in the garden a rose has been planted,
Says the boy, that my cheeks are not rosy.
And let him talk, for I am not worried,
For whom ever shall love me, will like me.
I do not put rouge upon my face,
In the fields the sun has given me some colour,
From the front and side, I have got a tan,
And I, indeed, I am a pretty girl.
My mother rocked me in house
At the well, did she daily bathe me.
Oh she bathed me, and yet forgot to dry me,
That I'd be, fine, comely, up to my death.

Like a sick bird to an old nest
I came back, mother, from the world
To eat your bread again.
You were happy and laughing and crying,
And then on the fate of your son
You've been moaning all night long.
But the next day, on the tip of your toes
You were circling around the bed, (...)
You were caressing my head.
You laughed, while stepping on the tip of your toes,
You were chatting to make me think,
That you are carefree,
That I could be calm and joyful,
That I would feel easier ...

My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me
They burned us in fire and flame
Everywhere they brought upon us, shame and derision
But no one could turn us away
From Thou, My God
And from Thy Torah, from Thy Commandments
My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me
Day and night I think of Thou, my God
I keep the Torah and the Commandments with awe
Save me! O save me from danger
As once the ancestors were saved from an evil decree
Hear my prayer and my crying
Thou alone can rescue me
Hear, o Israel, our God, the only one!

I have been walking for a long time
Oh my feet are so sore.
The darkness is thick, and the wind is tough.
Shine, lantern man, shine. Show me the way.
I will find the treasure.
Oh my feet are so sore.
I trot through forests and stroll through towns.
I think I had a vision.
One night I reached the bank of the lake.
The meadow was lovely, and all was peaceful.
Then in the dusk I saw a blue-purple man.
He danced between tubers and water.
Then he jumped up and then he jumped down.
Soon I forgot my very own name.
Suddenly there were three of the tiny shining ones.
I was running here and running there
He ensnared me, he glowed like coal.
I ran, and I fell into a hole in the marsh.
Instead of the fortune I thought I would find
I sat in the mud, being covered by duckweed.
Shine, lantern man, shine. Show me the way.
I will find the treasure.
Oh my feet are so sore.
